Né à Estagel en 1786, Arago était un brillant astronome et physicien et homme politique français. Attaché au Bureau des Longitudes, il fut nommé par Napoléon professeur d’analyse et de géodésie à l’Ecole polytechnique en 1809, puis directeur de l’Observatoire de Paris. En optique, Arago est un adepte de la théorie ondulatoire.
