The Birds’ slow burn tension steadily builds with the anticipation of how and when the eponymous birds will, indeed, attack, and Hitchcock’s intrepid, unruffled stride leads to more than 25 minutes going by before the first hint of potential violence, when a gull swoops down and assails Melanie, and nearly an hour before the first full-fledged assault.
