On June 15, 1863, Lucy Hayes, her four sons, and mother, Maria Webb traveled to Camp White on the river steamer Market Boy. After a few happy days together, little Joseph became ill and died (June 24). His father wrote in his diary that complications brought about by teething and dysentery caused his death.
