In the former Belzec extermination camp, the Germans interned and gassed at least 430,000 people. They were brought to the camp on cattle trains from the towns in the region.

The City Hall is part of the reason for the UNESCO World Heritage listing. You can climb the steps and enter the lobby, but the rest of the building is used for council offices.
