  3. Talbot (1629) Bark. Carried 100 planters, livestock, ordnance pieces and provisionings from Gravesend, just below London, to the fishing settlement on Cape Ann, later called Salem. The Rev. Francis Higginson among the passengers and provided an account of the unusually easy and quick passage in a July 24, 1629 letter to his English friends.

  4. The Higginson Fleet set sail on the 1 May 1629, arriving in Salem harbor on the 24 June 1629, and was greeted by a small group of settlers, led by John Endecott. The ships in the fleet were: Talbot (carried 19 cannon) Capt. Benjamin Gonson/Ganson, whose family had long history with the Royal Navy, Sir Admiral Richard Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake.

(It is interesting to note that the Thomas Graves who later became Rear Admiral was apparently master’s mate of the Talbot , which brought Higginson and Thomas Graves the engineer to Salem in 1629, and that he was master of various vessels both before and after that.)
