Charles was the second surviving son of James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark.

Having been settled on a younger branch of the family, Glossop-hall was the property, and occasionally the residence, of Bernard Howard, Esq., before he succeeded to the title of Duke of Norfolk, on the death of his cousin the late Duke, in 1815.
