The royal children, accompanied by the Countess of Leicester and ten or eleven servants, arrived at Penshurst on 14 June 1649.

He was the son of Thomas Bolton and Susannah Nelson.2 He married Frances Elizabeth Eyre, daughter of John Maurice Eyre, on 21 February 1821. He died on 1 November 1835 at age 49.
