Born in Detroit, Michigan, she was a daughter of the late George Thomas and Vera (Brokenshire) Peachey. She was the wife of the late Walter J. Bothwell.

The dukes of Anjou and Alencon were younger brothers of the King of France, and it seems likely that Elizabeth considered marrying one of them. Philip II considered marrying Elizabeth, but this would have been an unpopular alliance for her to make.
