The son of another Sir James Dundas (1570 - 1628), who was also a lawyer, the young Dundas came to the fore when he signed the National Covenant in 1639. He was knighted by King Charles I (1600-49) in 1641 and became the Member of Parliament for Midlothian in 1648.
