Her mother Cleophea Lutz taught her German and Italian, then English and French. As a teenager she travelled through Italy with her father, and made herself a name as a portraitist. After her mother’s death in 1757, she returned to Schwarzenberg with her father.

Angelika Kauffmann wurde 1741 als Tochter des Porträt-und Freskenmalers Joseph Johann Kauffmann und seiner Frau, der Hebamme Cleophea Lutz, in der Reichsgasse 57 der Gotteshausbund-Stadt Chur, wo ihr Vater zu diesem Zeitpunkt am bischöflichen Schloss arbeitete, geboren.
Outre la peinture, Kauffmann apprend rapidement plusieurs langues grâce à sa mère, Cleophea Lutz. Petite, Angelia Kauffmann lit sans cesse et démontre nombre d'aptitudes pour la musique ; son plus grand talent demeure tout de même la peinture.
