Lovingly nicknamed the “Mule” by her family because of her stubborn nature, she fought for a career of her own on the stage and marriage in 1936 to Austrian-born Jewish comedian and actor Vic Oliver. Though this marriage was not to last, her stage career blossomed.

The Churchills tried to dissuade their daughter from marrying Oliver who had been married twice before and was 17 years her senior. But a headstrong Sarah ran away to New York and married him on December 25, 1936.
