He is the only son and the eldest of the four children of Heinrich IV, Prince Reuss of Köstritz (1919 – 2012) and Marie Luise, Princess of Salm-Horstmar (1918 – 2015). Reuß-Köstritz ist der Name eines Paragiums des Hauses Reuß, das von 1692 bis 1918 bestand und dessen Mittelpunkt und Stammsitz das Schloss Köstritz war. Der Einfachheit halber werden auch die Inhaber und ihre Familienangehörigen, die so genannte Paragiatslinie der Grafen und Fürsten Reuß zu Köstritz aus dem Haus Reuß, so benannt.
