In 1792, John Trumbull painted Eleanor (Nelly) Parke Custis, who was Martha Washington’s granddaughter, in Philadelphia as part of a set of miniatures in preparation for The Resignation of General Washington (1832.8). She stands to the left of Martha in the finished painting.
Known as "Nelly Custis," Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis was the granddaughter of Martha Washington from her first marriage, and the adopted daughter of George Washington. When Martha married General Washington in 1759 she was the widow of Daniel Parke Custis [1711-1757], and had two young children, John Parke Custis [1754-1781] and Martha Parke Custis [1755-1773].

Daniel Parke Custis died when Jacky was three, and Martha was soon married again - to General George Washington. Washington became step-father to Jacky and his sister Patsy, and years later, after Jacky was himself killed at the Battle of Yorktown (1781), George and Martha adopted his six children (that is, Martha's grandchildren), including young George Washington Parke and Nelly Custis in 1783.
