Directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, and Conrad Vernon from a screenplay by Adamson, Joe Stillman, and the writing team of J. David Stem and David N. Weiss, it is the sequel to Shrek (2001) and the second installment in the Shrek film series.

The first film released in May 2001, with additional films, TV specials, and more following over the years. The series takes place in a world of combined fairy tale characters and creatures which include the main protagonist, an ogre named Shrek.
According to DreamWorks Animation co-founder and former CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, there has been talk about developing a fifth Shrek film, as the series was originally planned to be a pentalogy. By 2018, Shrek 5 was officially put into development, with Illumination Entertainment head Chris Meledandri serving as a producer.
