Rufus Thomas, född 26 mars 1917 i Cayce i Marshall County, Mississippi, död 15 december 2001 i Memphis, Tennessee, var en amerikansk sångare och komiker. Han var far till Carla Thomas och Vaneese Thomas , båda sångare, och keyboardisten Marvell Thomas (1941–2017) [ 1 ] .

His “The Breakdown” and “Do the Push and Pull” no doubt rubbed off on artists like James Brown, George Clinton and Prince, who all incorporated elements of his style into their own music and performances. Thomas passed away at the age of 84 in 2001.

Rufus achieved his first recorded success in the early Fiftiess. Sam Phillips had started Sun Records and was signing some of the local Memphis talent, including B.B. King, Johnny Ace, and Rufus. "Bearcat", Rufus's first release on Sun, sold a respectable hundred thousand copies and got the new label off to a good start.
