The great-grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill, he served as Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire between 1842 and 1857."
The eldest son of the 5th Duke of Marlborough, he was styled Earl of Sunderland until 1817, and Marquess of Blandford from 1817 until he succeeded to the dukedom in 1840. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Blandford's political career in the House of Commons began with his election for Chippenham in 1818.
