Griffith was the son Jacob “Roaring Jake” Wark Griffith, a Confederate army colonel in the American Civil War and elected as a Kentucky state legislator. Griffith began his creative career as an actor in touring companies. Griffith began making short films in 1908.

Although Roaring Jake died when Griffith was ten years old, plunging his family into poverty, the elder Griffith’s larger-than-life figure shaped Griffith’s worldview from an early age.
