In 918, Aethelstan’s father died, and he was succeeded as king by his half-brother, Aethelweard. Aethelstan was sent to live with his aunt in Mercia, where he continued his education and honed his military skills. He also gained valuable experience in governance, as he was appointed by his aunt to serve as the governor of the province of Kent.
His eldest son, Æthelstan, was old enough to be appointed King of Kent in 839, so he must have been born by the early 820s, and he died in the early 850s. [c] The second son, Æthelbald, is first recorded as a charter witness in 841, and if, like Alfred, he began to attest when he was around six, he would have been born around 835; he was King of Wessex from 858 to 860.
He succeeded his father as King of Wessex on Egbert's death in 839, at which time his kingdom stretched from the county of Kent in the east to Devon in the west. At the same time his eldest son or younger brother Æthelstan became sub-king of Kent as a subordinate ruler. Historians give conflicting assessments of Æthelwulf.
