In May of 1866, the 16th was sent to Barbados. Barbados, an island in the southeastern Caribbean, was colonized by the English in the early 1600s.
Hugo, who was still banished from France, was unable to attend her funeral in Villequier, where their daughter Léopoldine was buried.
