L’inspiration pour cet opéra La Carrière du libertin (The Rake's Progress) vient à Stravinsky lors d’une visite au Chicago Art Institute le 2 mai 1947 où il admire la série de huit peintures et les gravures A Rake's Progress (1732-33) de William Hogarth peignant les péripéties en quête de plaisirs et la déchéance dans la folie d’un libertin.

Auden y el escritor Chester Kallman trabajaron en el libreto. La ópera se estrenó en 1951 y marca la obra final del período neoclásico de Stravinsky. Mientras componía The Rake's Progress, Stravinsky se hizo amigo de Robert Craft, quien se convirtió en su asistente personal y amigo cercano y animó al compositor a escribir música en serie.
