Elizabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Baveria, Madame Palatine, second wife of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans and and mother of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. This canvas is one of a group of portraits collected by María Luisa de Orleans (1662-1689), first wife of Carlos II of Spain, which would become part of the Royal Collection.
By birth she was a Pfalzprinzessin, a Princess of the Palatinate, by marriage she would become sister-in-law to the great Sun King and a Child of France. Élisabeth-Charlotte du Palatinat in 1713. Liselotte, as I shall call her, was the second child of Prince-Elector Karl I. Ludwig and his wife Charlotte von Hessen-Kassel.
In addition, the relationship between Elisabeth-Charlotte and the Palatinate-Simmer dynasty will be examined. From a literary perspective, the question arises as to what extent Liselotte, through her often piquant style and her provocative choice of subject matter, played a decisive role in the creation and consolidation of national stereotypes.
