As with all Teshigahara films, this film is visually very fascinating. The cinematography, with mysterious angels and hypnotic pictures, is absolutely fantastic. The movie is essentially about a disfigured man who makes a model of a man's face together with a surgeon and uses this to try to reconstruct his life.
