He was the eldest son of Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March, by his wife Philippa of Clarence, the daughter of Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence (the second surviving son of King Edward III) by his wife Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster.
