CHARLES AUGUSTUS [Karl August] (1757–1828), grand-duke of Saxe-Weimar, son of Constantine, duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, and Anna Amalia of Brunswick, was born on the 3rd of September 1757. His father died when he was only nine months old, and the boy was brought up under the regency and supervision of his mother, a woman of enlightened but masterful temperament.

He received a private education and military training and served in the Prussian army. He became Grand Duke upon his grandfather’s death on January 5, 1901.
As the German Empire was crumbling at the end of World War I, Wilhelm Ernst, the last Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was forced to abdicate on November 9, 1918. Karl-August Wilhelm Ernst Friedrich Georg Johann Albrecht von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (teilweise auch gelistet als Carl-August mit und ohne Bindestrich; * 28. Juli 1912 in Wilhelmsthal; † 14. Oktober 1988 in Schienen am Bodensee) war von 1912 bis 1918 der letzte Erbgroßherzog von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach und Herzog zu Sachsen. [1]
