Alan Parker, tout d'abord remarqué avec l'ingénieux "Bugsy Malone" en 1976, parodie enfantine des films de gangsters, est entré dans la danse avec "Midnight Express", qui fut un véritable choc, notamment au festival de Cannes en 1978 à cause de la polémique qu'il souleva à propos de la description qu'il proposait de l'univers carcéral turc.
Midnight Express est l'histoire authentique de Billy Hayes (Brad Davis), un jeune Américain arrêté pour contrebande de haschich. Emprisonné dans une geôle turque où les prisonniers doivent se battre pour s'en sortir, il rencontre d'autres détenus : un Américain (Randy Quaid), un Anglais (John Hurt) et un Scandinave (Norbert Weisser).
