At the time, Smirke was just one of many contemporary architects inspired by the simple splendour of ancient Greek buildings in Italy, Greece and Turkey.

23 de jul. de 2012 · El crecimiento de los fondos del Museo Británico hizo que la casa Montagu se quedase pequeña, por lo que en 1845 fue demolida y en su lugar se construyó el edificio actual de estilo neoclásico, obra del arquitecto Robert Smirke. El museo atrajo a muchos historiadores y estudiosos, publicándose en 1808 el primer catálogo de su colección.
