  3. Childhood & Early Life. William McMahon was born on February 23, 1908, in Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales to Mary and William Daniel McMahon. He was the third among five children. His paternal grandfather, James ‘Butty’ McMahon, was the founder of one of the largest freight companies in Sydney. His mother passed away when he was a little boy.
