She was known for her roles in St. Louis Women, Hello, Dolly!, and in Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale. She won a Grammy Award in 1959, an Emmy Award in 1968, a Screen Actors Guild Award in 1976, and a Tony Award in 1986.
