Zara es la nieta mayor de la reina Isabel IIy del Príncipe Felipe, Duque de Edimburgo. Aparte de su hermano Peter, Zara tiene dos hermanas más. Felicity Tonkin quien nació en 1985 y es producto del amorío entre su padre y Heather Tonkin y Stephanie Phillips, quien nació en 1997 y es hija del segundo matrimonio de su padre con Sandy Pflueger .
Zara Phillips fue bautizada el 27 de julio de 1981 en el Castillo de Windsor acudiendo para la ocasión como padrinos, el Duque de York, Andrew Parker-Bowles, la Condesa de Lichfield , Hugh Thomas y Lady Helen Stewart.
