Edward Roland Noel Harriman. Mary Williamson Averell Harriman (July 22, 1851 – November 7, 1932) was an American philanthropist and the wife of railroad executive E. H. Harriman. Born in New York to a successful family, Averell married Harriman in 1879. Averell's father introduced Harriman to the railroad business.
Edward Roland Noel Harriman (1895–1978), who married Gladys Fries (1896–1983) in 1917. Harriman died on September 9, 1909, at his home, Arden, at 1:30 p.m. at age 61. Naturalist John Muir, who had joined him on the 1899 Alaska expedition, wrote in his eulogy of Harriman, "In almost every way, he was a man to admire."
Edward H. Harriman's estate was substantial, variously estimated between $70 million and $100 million upon his death in 1908, leaving his wife and children well provided for. Roland, whom friends and family sometimes called "Bunny," was educated at Groton School, from which he graduated in 1913, and Yale University (B.A., 1917), where he was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity.
Roland Harriman was elected into the Living Hall of Fame in 1961. He died in 1978 at his home in Arden, New York.
