When Houston voters approved the establishment of Houston Community College as part of the Houston Independent School District on May 18, 1971, the first classes were held in the evenings at selected area high schools, including HISD’s Houston Technical Institute. Today that institute is known as HCC Central’s San Jacinto Memorial Building.
