The Navy. Ford was a soldier in World War II. He served for the United States Navy as the leader of the photography division. On D-day, Ford and his soldiers crossed the English Channel. The soldiers arrived at Omaha Beach and watched the first boats land on the shore. Ford went on to the beach and filmed the battle take place.

Era el menor de los trece hijos de los inmigrantes irlandeses John Augustine Feeney y Barbara Curran. La familia Feeney era católica y la infancia de Ford estuvo impregnada de tradiciones y valores irlandeses. Desde muy joven, Ford se aficionó al mar.
