Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan (1655-1693) was an Irish soldier and commander of the Jacobite forces during the Williamite War in Ireland from 1689 to 1691. Born into a wealthy Catholic family, and of mixed Anglo-Norman and Gaelic descent, Sarsfield would play a prominent role as part of the Jacobite “War Party”, successfully managing to relieve the first siege of Limerick.

Patrick Sarsfield was married to Honora Burke, the daughter of William, 7th Earl of Clanricarde and his second wife Helen McCarthy, daughter of the Earl of Clancarthy. The Clanricards lived in Portumna Castle on the Connaught side of the Shannon, which today is an OPW heritage site and open to the public.
Sarsfield's elder brother, William, having no son by his marriage with Mary, a natural daughter of Charles II. by Lucy Walters, and sister to the Duke of Monmouth, left the estates, worth about £2,000 a year, to his brother Patrick.

Born into a wealthy Catholic family, Sarsfield joined a regiment recruited by James Scott, Duke of Monmouth for the 1672 to 1674 Third Anglo-Dutch War , a subsidiary of the Franco-Dutch War .
