Henry Hobson Richardson was born in 1838 into an affluent family of Louisiana plantation owners. Like the many of the sons of well-to-do Southerners, Richardson went North to complete his education. In 1856, he enrolled in Harvard College. After graduating, Richardson determined upon a career in architecture.
Richardson came to Harvard University in 1856 and stayed until 07/1859. He settled in Paris, France, in 09/1859, choosing that country spent the Civil War years in Europe, studying in Paris and elsewhere, and returned in 1865, at war's end. He got married in 1867 in Boston, MA, and set up his household on Staten Island, NY.
Henry Hobson Richardson was born at the Priestley Plantation in St. James Parish, Louisiana, on September 29, 1838. His father, Henry Dickenson Richardson, was a cotton merchant in New Orleans, and his mother, Catherine Caroline Priestley, was the granddaughter of Dr. Joseph Priestley, an English scientist known for discovering oxygen.
