BUCKINGHAM AND NORMANBY, JOHN SHEFFIELD, 1st Duke of (1648–1721), English statesman and poet, was born on the 7th of April 1648. He was the son of Edmund, 2nd earl of Mulgrave, and succeeded to that title on his father’s death in 1658.

John Sheffield was the only son of Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Earl of Mulgrave, and succeeded his father as 3rd Earl and 5th Baron Sheffield in 1658. At the age of eighteen he joined the fleet, to serve in the Second Anglo-Dutch War ; on the renewal of hostilities in 1672 he was present at the Battle of Sole Bay, and in the next year received the command of a ship.

Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Earl of Mulgrave (December 1611 – 24 August 1658) was an English peer who supported the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War period. His father was Sir John Sheffield (drowned in 1614), heir to Lord Sheffield , and his mother was Grizel Anderson, daughter of Sir Edmund Anderson, chief justice of common pleas. [1]
