La familia de Ibn Hazm era originaria del la provincia de Huelva. Realizó una intensa actividad política. Fue visir del califa Abderramán V y a consecuencia de intrigas palaciegas estuvo en la cárcel en varias ocasiones. También sufrió un breve destierro. Abandonó la actividad política para dedicarse a sus estudios de teología y derecho.
