Hedwig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp (23 October 1636 – 24 November 1715) was Queen of Sweden from 1654 until 1660 as the wife of King Charles X Gustav. She served as regent during the minority of her son, King Charles XI , from 1660 until 1672, and during the minority of her grandson, King Charles XII , in 1697.

The Duke was described as " the most beautiful Prince in Europe " and was described as sensitive and spoiled by his mother. Hedvig "Hedda" Eleonora von Fersen was a Swedish noble and a lady in waiting to the Swedish queen, Sophia Magdalena of Denmark. She was the daughter of Axel von Fersen the Elder and Hedvig Catharina De la Gardie, and the sister of Count Axel von Fersen the Younger, Sophie Piper and Fabian von Fersen (1762–1818).
Het huis Sleeswijk-Holstein-Gottorp (Duits: Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf), ook wel huis Holstein-Gottorf geschreven) was een vorstenhuis in de hertogdommen Sleeswijk en Holstein. Het hertogdom Holstein behoorde tot de Neder-Saksische Kreits binnen het Heilige Roomse Rijk .
Holstein-Gottorp otorgó apoyo estratégico a Suecia en la guerra sueco-danesa que estalló en 1657, cuando el rey danés invadió territorios suecos en Alemania. La guerra fue demasiado costosa para Dinamarca, y en el Tratado de Roskilde de 1658 se estipuló que el ducado de Holstein-Gottorp ya no sería más vasallo del rey danés.
