John Ashworth Nelder FRS (8 October 1924 – 7 August 2010) was a British statistician known for his contributions to experimental design, analysis of variance, computational statistics, and statistical theory.

He was a pioneer of statistical computing and made major contributions to experimental design, numerical minimization, statistical modelling and statistical computation.
He is a familiar figure at Harpenden Station, waiting to catch the train to London. John Nelder has received many honors for his statistical work. He was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver of the Royal Statistical Society in 1977 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1981.
