The book begins with a brief biography of Bürgi to familiarize readers with his life and work, as well as to offer an historical context in which to explore his contributions. The second chapter then describes the extant copies of the Arithmetische und Geometrische Progreß Tabulen, with a detailed description of the copy that is the focus of this book, the 1620 “Graz manuscript”.
Bürgi, Jost [Joost, Jobst] Born Lichtensteig, St. Gallen, Switzerland, 28 February 1552. Died Kassel, (Hessen Germany), 31 January 1632. Jost Bürgi was a clock maker, astronomer, and applied mathematician. His father was probably a fitter. Very little seems to be known about his life before 1579.

Joost Bürgi. Joost Bürgi (* 28. február 1552, Lichtensteig - † 31. január 1632, Kassel) bol švajčiarsky matematik, astronóm a výrobca hodiniek. V roku 1605 prišiel do Prahy a stal sa dvorným hodinárom cisára Rudolfa II. V Prahe zostal až do roku 1631. Zostrojil geometrický vymeriavací prístroj a pomerné kružidlo.
González-Velasco ( 2011) stated that “for the sake of fairness that the earliest discoverer of logarithms was Joost, or Jobst, Bürgi (1552–1632), a Swiss clockmaker, about 1588” (p. 100). As was the case with Bürgi, Napier began working on his conception of logarithms some years before his first publication in 1614.
