Hans Hofmann. Nacido en Weissenberg, Alemania, creció en Munich, donde estudió arquitectura antes de dedicarse a la pintura. Entre 1904 y 1914 vivió en París, experimentando con la pintura abstracta. En 1915 regresa a Munich, creando una academia de pintura que dirigió hasta 1931, fecha en la que se traslada a los Estados Unidos.

By 1904 the artist had moved to Paris where he was affected by the works of Henrie Matisse and Robert Delaunay. Hofmann exhibited his works in Paris until the outbreak of World War I, at which time he was forced to move back to Munich.
