Alfred de Vigny was one of France's foremost Romantics Poets. His poetry expressed a stoic philosophy of pessimism, stressing the lonliness of one's struggle within a hostile world. Vigny was also a playwright and novelist. He was born in Loches, Indre-et-Loire in 1797 as the only son of Leon Pierre de Vigny, a former officer of the king's army.
