He wasn’t cruel to her because he hated her, but, I think, because he felt it necessary to have the right kind of wife. Pepys is insecure about his place, his value. When he was away from her he pined for her.
28 de feb. de 2021 · Elizabeth fell ill shortly after Pepys abandoned his diary in 1669 and died in the same summer. Pepys never married again, but for 33 years, he had a relationship with Mary Skinner, with whom he shared a suite of rooms in the house of his lifelong friend William Hewer in Clapham.
In the summer of 1663, a ship's carpenter, William Bagwell, and his wife began to cultivate Pepys as a patron, while Pepys cultivated Mrs Bagwell as a mistress. Mrs Bagwell's first name is not mentioned by Pepys, but she was almost certainly called Elizabeth.
