Carol Ann Duffy was twenty-seven in 1983 and the National Poetry Prize was in its fifth year, having been launched by the Poetry Society in 1978. Anonymised submissions, then as now, were judged by a panel of three poets. In 1983 Gillian Clarke was one of the judges, along with Vernon Scannell and Kevin Crossley Holland.
