Beatrix Potter was very keen on her ‘side shows’, as she called them. A woman of unusual entrepreneurial genius, Beatrix Potter registered a Peter Rabbit doll on 28 December 1903, recognising that ‘spin-off’ merchandise such as painting books, board games, and printed wallpapers would be marketing assets for her work.

From a young age, Beatrix and her brother Bertram Potter (born in 1872), showed promise as artists, constantly sketching animals from their classroom menagerie. Taught by governesses, including Annie Moore (who remained a close friend of Beatrix), in their home classroom, the children kept a multitude of pets for study, even smuggling in hedgehogs, mice, and frogs from the garden.
