William Blake and his works have been widely studied and critiqued during the twentieth and now the twenty-first centuries, although he was hardly recognized before that. His biography "Life" by Alexander Gilchrist made him famous in 1863, but it wasn't until the beginning of the twentieth century that he was truly understood and recognized.
Songs of Innocence was the first of Blake's illuminated books published in 1789. The poems and artwork were reproduced by copperplate engraving and colored with washes by hand. In 1794 he expanded the book to include Songs of Experience. The spellings, punctuation and capitalizations are those of the original Blake manuscripts.

The Songs are now often studied for their literary merit alone, but they were originally produced as illuminated books, engraved, hand-printed, and coloured by Blake himself.
