It sets the stage and brings in the players for the formation, and ultimate near total demise of, the British Expeditionary Force of 1914. The first 7 division of the old professional British Army, possibly the finest force to leave these shores to fight.
The British entered World War I convinced of victory. Many even predicted an end to hostilities by Christmas. For the British Expeditionary Force, which was instead obliterated by 1915, this proved a costly assumption.
