The Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine (German: Großherzogtum Hessen und bei Rhein), or, between 1806 and 1816, Grand Duchy of Hesse (German: Großherzogtum Hessen)-as it was also known after 1816-was a member state of the German Confederation from 1806, when the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt was elevated to a Grand Duchy, until 1918, when all the German monarchies were overthrown.
The Grand Duchy joined the German Empire in 1871. As a small state within the Empire, the Grand Duchy had limits placed on its autonomy, but significant religious, social, and cultural reforms were carried out. During the November Revolution after World War I in 1918, the Grand Duchy was overthrown and replaced by the People's State of Hesse.

Two branches died out in the seventeenth century; the nineteenth-century descendants of the dynasty ruled until 1866 in the Electorate of Hesse- Kassel, and in the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt until 1918.
