Leopold von Ranke, orig. Leopold Ranke, (born Dec. 21, 1795, Wiehe, Thuringia, Saxony—died May 23, 1886, Berlin), German historian. Ranke taught at the University of Berlin (1825–71). Inspired by the scientific method of historical study used by Barthold Georg Niebuhr, he championed objective writing based on philological and textual criticism of source materials.

Leopold von Ranke (1785-1886) war einer der bedeutendsten und produktivsten deutschen Historiker des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Vorrede zu Geschichten der romanischen und germanischen Völker (1824), seine Notizen über Geschichte und Philosophie (1881-1888) und ein Auszug aus seinen Vorlesungen zur Weltgeschichte (1854) sind hier wiedergegeben.

Called the “Nestor of Historians,” his fame rested not only on his massive output of scholarship—over sixty volumes—but on his formulation of the historical method, his conception of the unity of European history, and his mastery of nearly the whole of modern European history.
