I loved the comic feeling Imamura gives to the story about the days that preceded Japanese capitulation and the doctor, who believes that hepatitis endangers Japan's stability to the point he is called "Dr. Liver" instead of "Dr. Akagi".
Shohei Imamura loves scenes that contain only a single light source, since the gift of light is sparing and every human has a permeable shroud of darkness over their faces. A person's shadow is an extension of themselves, and when the robber/rapist first appears, brandishing a knife, his shadow is cast on the wall behind him, in exaggerated stature.
