Early Years. Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, on April 20, 1889, the son of a fifty-two-year-old Austrian customs official, Alois Schickelgruber Hitler, and his third wife, a young peasant girl, Klara Poelzl, both from the backwoods of lower Austria. The young Hitler was a resentful, discontented child.

As a soldier in the German army in World War I, he was wounded and gassed. In 1920 he became head of propaganda for the renamed National Socialists ( Nazi Party) and in 1921 party leader.
Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Nazi Germany who rose to power with his radical ideology. He was responsible for starting World War II and initiating the Holocaust.
